I am currently studying at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. That’s right – Africa! My mom and dad were surprised in my choice as well. Port Elizabeth is a booming urban area of South African that lies on the Indian Ocean. PE is known as “the windy city” and “the friendly city,” and I can tell you right away that those nicknames follow suit! The population of it is around 750,000 – way bigger than little ole’ Menomonie, WI! I arrived on Wednesday, January 27th and head back home on Tuesday, June 21st. The first week of classes started on February 8th.
The university that I am attending (NMMU), has been a tremendous help in making the international students feel welcome. Ten percent of the student population of NMMU are international students, so we had a week long orientation. In this orientation we did multiple informational sessions regarding safety, homesickness, culture shock, and information about the university. We also had some fun events like African drumming, campus tour, scavenger hunt, and a city tour. Because I have been on the go-go-go so much keeping myself busy, I haven’t had time to be homesick. I have a feeling that I will be after the first week or two of classes.
